Study and live in Reutlingen

This guide was assembled by first-semester students (BSc Production Management) within the framework of the course “learning and creativity techniques” taught by Prof. Dr. Stephan Hoefer.

Dear (future) fellow students,

It is our aim to provide you with all the information useful for your first semester. We have tried to put in a nutshell, all the information which took us so long to gather when we started our studies here ourselves – from students for students!

The decision to study at Reutlingen University was a good choice. Not only has the university repeatedly achieved good positions in rankings, but  Reutlingen and its surroundings are also a good place to live.

Reutlingen has more than 110 000 inhabitants and is situated about 30 kilometres south of Stuttgart close to the Swabian Alb. Many companies active on the international market, such as Bosch, Willi Betz, Stoll, Rieber, Kullen, and Burkhardt und Weber are situated here.
There is a lot to see in the surrounding area and a great variety of leisure activities can be pursued such as hiking in the Swabian Alb, sightseeing at Lichtenstein castle or climbing in the nearby climbing park. There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools in Reutlingen and neighbouring towns. There are museums, a theatre and cinemas, which offer reduced prices for students.

The Reutlingen region is an industrial centre at the foot of the Swabian Alb, it offers a wide variety of part-time student jobs. The university is often offered jobs for student assistants. Moreover, temporary work can be found during the vacations. Of course there are, as in any city, possibilities of getting a job at a pub, a gas station or a shop. Often job offers are placed on notice boards in the corridors. Big companies in the region are Robert Bosch GmbH, Hugo Boss and Walter AG.
Reutlingen University is located on the outskirts of Reutlingen. There are bus stops close to the campus, which bring the students into the city centre. The central bus station is only a 5 minutes walk from the train station. Reutlingen is well-connected by train with Tübingen and Stuttgart. Stuttgart airport can also be reached in only 30 minutes by car or by the Expresso bus which shuttles between Reutlingen and the airport. A student ticket can be bought for around €60 per semester at all places that sell naldo-tickets. With this ticket you can use public transport in the whole naldo-area:www.naldo.de.
Reutlingen has a number of places of cultural interest, most of them located in the city centre. There are museums of local history, art and natural history, historical fountains and parts of the city wall, as well as different theatres. If you are interested in these or in getting to know where the narrowest street in the world (Guiness book of records) is located, you can participate in a guided tour through the city.

Further places worth visiting are close by. Lichtenstein castle, Hohenzollern castle, Marbach stud farm, Bad Urach, Tübingen and many more. For movie enthusiasts, Reutlingen has the Planie cinema centre and there are many cinemas in Tübingen and Metzingen too.

Reutlingen has several bigger night clubs: The M-Park, Färberei 4, P&K, Club Mea and die Zelle. In addition there are many bars and pubs, mostly in the city centre. There are opportunities to play pool, snooker or darts, e.g. at the Ambiente, Woodys, City-Bowling or Shooters in Pfullingen.
Tübingen and Stuttgart can be reached by bus or train within a short time. The surrounding villages of Reutlingen are – on weekends and holidays – also reachable by night-busses. Therefore it is no problem to live outside the city. There are also parties on campus, which are usually organised by student groups. More information about locations and events can be found at: www.party-reutlingen.de.
