ESB Business Cup 2011: 1st round
This year’s ESB Business Cup 2011, organized by students of all study programmes and semesters, has now been kick-started with its successful online qualification stage on Friday, 15th 2011.
88 teams from 20 countries participated and competed in this online simulation round, whereof 12 teams directly qualified for the finals in Reutlingen. The other 4 teams were selected in cooperation with our sponsors by considering their CVs.
The online qualification stage consisted of an internet-based simulation in which the participants were assigned the task of successfully managing a subsidiary of a leading, fast-growing Korean car manufacturer in the year 2018. Choosing the right car portfolio in order to gain a foothold in the competitive market was the most challenging task. A second challenge was to reduce carbon dioxide emission with increasing shortage of crude oil. In this scenario the European Commission is, through a regulation, forcing the carmakers to lower the average CO2 emissions for any new car. Each non-compliance act will be punished with a premium. In order to fulfill the aim of reducing the CO2 emissions all participants were able to develop new technologies and change the strategic positioning of their company. All teams were competing directly with the other participating teams.
The final round of the ESB Business Cup 2011 will take place from May 12th to May 13th in Reutlingen. Our 16 finalist teams will travel to Reutlingen in order to work on two case studies prepared by our sponsors and will also get the chance to visit their lectures on sustainability. Moreover, all finalists will have the chance to participate in a get-together with our company representatives and therefore get a great opportunity to enlarge their professional network. International experience throughout the event is the centre of attention of the ESB Business Cup.
We express our thanks to all our sponsors - Oliver Wyman Consulting, Axel Springer AG, Commerzbank, Celesio, IBM and our support association V.I.M.A – without their engagement we would have never been able to organize an event such as the ESB Business Cup 2011.
