Exchange Students

"Außenwirtschaft" welcomes every year some 60 to 70 students from its more than 30 partner universities worldwide.

Detailed information in English on all aspects of their planned period of study at ESB can be found in the ‘GUIDE for Exchange Students from Partner Universities‘.

The document should be read carefully and in its entirety by all prospective exchange students.

Exchange students are registered during the induction session before the start of the relevant semester (see ‘Documents & dates‘). A full list of the documentation essential for registration can be found in section 4.12 of the ‘GUIDE for Exchange Students from Partner Universities‘ (see ‘Documents & dates‘).

An informal application can be found on clicking on ‘Application Form‘. Please complete and send as soon as possible by fax (+49/7121-271-6022) to the secretaries’ office.

Course selection

Informationen for the selection of courses as well as a list of the courses offered during the next semester can be found in the document ‘List of Courses‘. Please consider that in the list you find only the courses for the next semester and that only the courses in this list are definitively offered during the next semester.

Full lecture/course descriptions in English can be found on the web pages of the study programmes. Exchange students on the Außenwirtschaft programme may especially select courses from the programmes ‘Außenwirtschaft‘ and ’International Business‘.

Exchange students should seek the advice of the Exchange Programme Coordinator at their home university about course selection at ESB Business School, grade/credit requirements, etc. The Liaison Assistant (Contact) and the International Relations Officer at the ESB Business School can be consulted for further clarification.

Housing

Administratively and financially the student residences, or dorms/hostels, (Studentenwohnheime) adjoining the campus are not part of the University, but are owned and administered by e.g. the GWG Housing Association and the Tübingen Studentenwerk. We are therefore not able to reserve a room for you, nor can we exert direct pressure on the GWG to allocate a room to you. You have to apply for a room in the normal way (please find appropriate application forms in the section ‘Documents & dates‘), though exchange students are normally granted a certain preferential treatment in the allocation.

Deadlines for submitting the application forms:

GWG Housing Association

Summer Semester: 15th December

Winter Semester: 15th June

Studentenwerk Tübingen

Summer Semester: 15th January

Winter Semester: 15th June

If you are allocated a room, this will be notified to you at your home address in writing or to the current address you have mentioned on the application form, to which the contract should be sent. You will have to sign both copies of the contract and must return both copies signed immediately, or the room will be allocated to someone else. You should receive this notification by mid-July or mid-January. One of the copies of the contract, signed by the responsible person at the students’ residence, will be returned to you. This copy should be brought with you, it must be shown to the appropriate caretaker (Hausmeister) before you are given your key. If you do not arrive until the weekend before the start of courses, please note that the caretaker is not on duty on weekends.

Prices and deposit

Residences administered by the GWG:

Single room: EUR 210 per month, and often, exchange students are offered a shared room (rent EUR 160). A refundable deposit (Kaution) of 2 months’ rent (i.e. EUR 420 or EUR 320) plus EUR 30 for your key is payable on, or shortly after, arrival. When you leave, you must officially clear your room with the caretaker.

The residence administered by the Studentenwerk Tübingen is rather more expensive: EUR 240 - 270 per month (plus EUR 300 deposit). All residence fees are subject to increases.

Please note:

In all student residences you will have to pay for a whole half-year beginning Sept. 1 or March 1 as contracts are only placed for the complete semester. You will have to sign a rent contract: please remember that this is legally binding, that is to say you remain responsible for paying the rent for the whole of the stipulated period, you cannot just give up the tenancy on your room when it suits you.

The residences are self-catering, so you will need to bring your own bed-linen (including pillows and blankets), but other equipment (such as cutlery, cups, saucepans) is probably best bought locally. An information sheet on the facilities offered by the residences of GWG, and on the regulations, may be found below (Equipment and Facilities).

Last but not least:

Much of the day-to-day running of the residences, as well as the maintenance of good order and discipline, and certain cleaning duties, are the responsibility of the residents in the residences: this "self-administration" is carried out through residence student committees and representatives. All residents are obliged to participate and cooperate in the smooth and consensual running of the residences.

In case that no room in a students’ residence is offered to you we will do our best to find private accommodation for you. A private room will cost upwards of EUR 250 per month and may involve some travel to and from the university.
