The “new“ International Business Bachelor`s Programme

Many positive innovations in the update of the study and examination regulations

By: Prof. Dr. Oliver Götz / Lena Jauernig

The International Business (IB) degree programme continues to develop: as of winter semester 2019/2020, the new study and examination regulations (StuPro) will become effective. The StuPro defines the general conditions, the procedure and the contents of a study programme. The new IB StuPro allows the IB students even greater flexibility regarding the individual design of their course. What are the changes in detail? Professor Dr Oliver Götz, marketing officer in the IB degree programme, explains the innovations.

What is special about the International Business bachelor`s degree programme?
The IB bachelor`s degree programme is the perfect preparation for an international career. The business administration programme is entirely in English. Half of the study places go to international applicants so that a very special community is growing on the Reutlingen campus:  IB students from 70 different nations study and live together.

How is the bachelor`s degree programme oriented?
The International Business bachelor`s programme offers maximum flexibility with regard to content-related course specialisations, internships and semesters abroad as well as type of degree. Unique in Germany is the fast-track option leading to a master`s degree. Along with their bachelor`s degree, students can obtain an MBA or master`s degree from one of our partner universities in just one additional semester.

What is the objective of the new study and examination regulations?
When revising the programme a special emphasis was put on further enhancing the attractiveness of the degree programme. With the new StuPro the students will enjoy greater flexibility with respect to the design of the programme. Moreover, the organisational procedures of the course have been optimised.

More flexibility: What does this mean in detail?
The “new” IB degree programme offers electives for the creation of a certain profile in marketing, strategy, finance, leadership, digital business or economics. In addition, the students can choose from different degrees. Besides the bachelor`s degree from ESB Business School they will have the opportunity to obtain a double bachelor`s degree or a bachelor`s plus MBA/master`s degree in cooperation with our international partner universities.

What benefits do the electives offer?
The change to a system with electives offers the students further and more flexible specialisation options so that they can enhance their individual profile. Further, we will in future be able to respond better to current developments such as digitisation by providing special events.

What organisational benefits can the students expect of the new StuPro?
The change in the order of semesters improves the study conditions and reduces the number of necessary changes of location and residence. In future the students will spend several semesters in a row in Reutlingen and therefore will not need to move so often. In addition, the module structure has been revised so that more homogeneous modules lead among other things to a simpler recognition of credits, for example from previous studies (abroad).

Another change is the so-called honours programme. What does this mean?
The honours programme gives students the opportunity to obtain additional ECTS credits and to discover new, exciting fields. Thus students will be able to join research seminars and projects, further electives or modules from other subjects.

When will the new StuPro take effect and to whom will it apply?
The new StuPro will apply to all students beginning their International Business bachelor studies in winter semester 2019/20. Those already studying IB complete their studies according to the former StuPro.
