Industry 4.0 Test Environments

Within the framework of the funding initiative “Industry 4.0 Test Environments – Mobilisation of SMEs for Industry 4.0“, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is supporting the innovation potential of small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) in the testing and implementation of digitized processes and products. A central module within the funding initiative is the Industry 4.0 test environments which enable the companies to test their I 4.0 products and components as well as the related digital processes and networked business models under realistic conditions.

The ESB Logistics Learning Factory has existed since 2016 as a research platform with the focus on the adaptability of production systems using Industry 4.0 solutions. It is a production facility with all the process steps of a multi-variant batch and one-off production and also has an app-based and cloud-based collaborative engineering, planning and simulation platform and a manufacturing self execution system (MSES) that is in constant development. Besides a technically broad infrastructure, it has the necessary competencies to provide targeted impulses for carrying out application-related use cases and the further development of existing solutions. The SMEs can therefore carry out their own projects for the evaluation of innovative approaches of an existing infrastructure.
