Change of finance function: IB students at the Betriebswirtschafts-Tag 2019

Exciting insights into the future of Finance & Controlling

For two days (18. September and 19. September), three International Business students, together with Prof. Charifzadeh, had the opportunity to participate in the „73. Betriebswirtschafter-Tag der Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e.V.“ in Düsseldorf. The event was held by the Schmalenbach Gesellschaft, one of the most renowned scientific associations aiming at bringing theory and practice together. The topic of the conference this year was "Transformation of the Finance Function" and how digital technologies shape the future of finance and accounting.

On the first day, several top managers of leading companies gave speeches about digital transformation in their companies and new challenges they have to face (among them Stefan Asenkerschbaumer, executive board of Bosch, and Luka Mucic, CFO of SAP). Moreover, technology experts from research field also presented the current and future possibilities of AI application in finance.

On the following day, students were given the chance to attend a workshop organized by Robert Bosch GmbH. The workshop "Bosch Finance Transformation" included highly interactive sessions between students and managers from Bosch. In smaller groups the topics Advanced Analytics, Controlling Roles and Competencies of tomorrow, Workplace Finance and Finance for Future were presented and furthermore the real-time finance dashboard from Bosch was illustrated and explained. The conclusion of the students: “This conference gave us a brighter vision of the future of finance and controlling and the skills needed to succeed as the controller of tomorrow. Not only the current problems but also the actions, plans, and visions of companies were discussed. In addition to the inspiring discussion, the conference was a great opportunity to talk to participants and members of the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft who are experienced employees/employers or university professors. We are really thankful that Professor Charifzadeh and the ESB Business School gave us this unique opportunity to join the Betriebswirtschafter-Tag.”
