Hybrid Semester with In-Class Courses

ESB Business School is planning in-class teaching for all new students in winter semester 2020/ 2021.

After an almost completely virtual summer semester, the upcoming winter semester at ESB Business School should see at least some students back in attendance. The rooms available should be able to be used primarily by students who have not yet had classes on campus. Modules that are difficult to carry out online will also take place at the university.

The Office of the Dean at ESB Business School is more than pleased that at least some of the lectures and seminars will be held on Reutlingen University premises again in the coming winter semester. "Unfortunately, we are unable to offer all students face-to-face courses on campus. With the current distancing regulations, we do not have sufficient rooms for this. However, our aim is to enable as many students as possible to take part in face-to-face teaching on campus in compliance with the current distancing and hygiene regulations ", states Prof. Dr. Christoph Binder, Dean of ESB Business School.

This applies primarily to first and second semester courses in the ESB bachelors’ and masters’ programmes, as well as for students in the fifth semester of the BSc International Management Double Degree (IMX), returning from their first four semesters abroad. These students have not yet been able to study on campus and therefore benefit from the direct exchange and contact with fellow students and lecturers.

Also modules and courses that only make sense on site, in particular lab and simulation classes in the business and engineering programmes, should be held in a practical, face-to-face setting. Exams at the end of the winter semester will mostly be permitted to take place on campus. However, take-home and oral exams via video conference should continue to be an option.

ESB Business School is currently working with the administration of Reutlingen University to develop a detailed hygiene concept in order to ensure that the applicable distancing and hygiene rules are adhered to for in-class attendance in the coming winter semester. The higher semesters will, however, have to be largely carried out online.

For students who have to undertake an internship and/ or a semester abroad in the winter semester, which may not be able to be completed as planned due to Covid-19, the respective persons responsible will ensure practical solutions are worked out.

ESB Business School is also preparing for the eventuality that the university will have to switch back completely to online teaching at short notice due to a possible "second wave" or locally enforced lockdown.

"We believe that with the hybrid model, we have created a good planning basis for the coming winter semester and are able to fulfil the requirements of many students for in-class attendance - especially in the first years of their degree programmes. Our overriding goal is to ensure that students can continue or complete their studies in the best possible way, all of course always in line with the legal regulations as well as ensuring the health and well-being of all concerned," states Prof. Dr. Christoph Binder, summing up the procedure for the coming winter semester.
