At the start of winter semester 2020/2021, the first generation of the BSc International Management Double Degree (IMX) students set foot on the campus of Brock University for half of their studies in the new German-Canadian link of the programme. In turn, ESB Business School welcomed students from its new partner university to Reutlingen. The first half of the study abroad went extremely well despite the pandemic.

In the BSc International Management Double Degree (IMX) programme, students study at two universities, spending four semesters each at ESB Business School and at one of the IPBS partner universities abroad. For the winter semester 2020/2021, one group had the opportunity to complete part of their studies at Brock University in Canada - a first.

Due to travel restrictions last autumn, students initially had to stay in Germany and start their semester at the new partner university online. Only after the regulations in Canada were relaxed in November were they able to travel abroad.

Although studies in Canada will continue to take place online for the time being, the students are happy about the change of scenery. Even though they have not yet experienced Brock University in on-campus classes, they were still able to familiarize themselves with their host country and get to know their university and fellow students online.

“I now live near Niagara Falls with two other students. We visited the falls right after our quarantine,” says Elke Neumann, a student in the BSc International Management Double Degree (IMX) programme. Her fellow student Carina Hohenadel adds, “We walked around and explored the Brock University campus even though teaching was online. Of course, we hope to get the opportunity to do this even more often in our second year of study and, above all, to sit in the lecture hall on campus.”

Julie Dengler, coordinator of the German-American link in the BSc International Management Double Degree (IMX) programme, is pleased with the new cooperation. “It is very important to us that students can gain valuable intercultural experience and skills despite online lectures. By working closely with Brock University in these challenging times, we are living up to our motto 'Truly International’,” she says.

Every year, ESB Business School welcomes over 100 students from a total of thirteen partner universities to the BSc International Management Double Degree (IMX) programme. The first students from Brock University in Canada will are set to attend classes at the Reutlingen campus in the upcoming winter semester.
