How is the part-time MBA programme at ESB structured?
The programme is divided into two module types:
- Core Modules (compulsory modules): Provide a comprehensive management education.
- Electives (compulsory-elective modules): Allow students to specialise from the second semester onwards.
Flexibility within the programme:
Some of the compulsory electives are offered online. One elective is intended as a period of study abroad and can be flexibly integrated into semesters 2 to 4. Each module concludes with an examination. If required, the thesis may also be written in the 5th semester.

Frequently asked questions
The part-time MBA at ESB Business School offers excellent value for money: as an AACSB-accredited programme at a state university, it costs less than €15,000. An integrated study abroad module and two reknown leadership certificates go beyond what one might expect. On top of that you'll experience team building and networking events to facilitate a vast professional network and perhaps some long lasting friendships.
Each module usually comprises two weekend blocks of face-to-face teaching and two online evenings. The first semester covers the fundamentals of management, followed by strategy, leadership and individual electives. The programme is designed to last four semesters, but can be extended flexibly if required.
Each subject comprises approximately 35 teaching units split over two weekends, as well as 10 online teaching units spread over two evenings. Depending on your prior knowledge, you should allow for up to 10 hours per week for self-study.
Tuition fees are paid in instalments each semester. Many students claim these costs as income-related expenses for tax purposes. In addition, some employers support further education either financially or by granting time off work.
The organisational effort involved is minimal. We provide information on suitable courses and timetables, and help you choose a partner university. We use the Learning Agreement to clarify in advance how your credits will be recognised, and closely support you throughout the nomination process. You are responsible for organising your own travel and accommodation. We’ll support you with tips and contacts to former participants.
There will inevitably be occasions when you miss a module relevant to your degree. In such cases, we ask that you work through the material independently. If your absence falls during an exam weekend, this may mean that you will not be able to sit the exam until the following semester.
